Why Kansas City duct systems load up the way they do

Most of it starts in the wall cavity. Kansas City is the largest city in the metro, and its core is old. Pre-1920 brick and four-square homes in midtown and the Northeast were never built for forced air. Ductwork got retrofitted later, squeezed into balloon-frame walls. Those cavities leak. Dust from the stud bays feeds straight into the supply.

Converted gravity trunks are the other common find. Big octopus trunks off a coal-era furnace, reused for a modern blower. Velocity is low in the oversized sections. Debris settles there instead of moving to the register. We look at those first.

Outside air matters too. Homes near the interstates and the rail corridors pull in soot. You see it as a dark gray film on filter pleats, finer than household lint. A tight filter and a sealed return cabinet do more for that than anything else.

Layout shifts by neighborhood era. Streetcar-era bungalows and older cores usually run in the basement. Postwar ranches in the Northland and 2000s builds on the far north and south edges often run in the attic, which means hotter access and crushed flex to check.

If we find asbestos-wrapped sections at the plenum, we stop. That gets abated by a licensed contractor, not cleaned around.

Frequently Asked Questions

My midtown house still has the old gravity furnace trunks converted over to forced air. Can those even be cleaned?

Usually yes, but it's a different job than cleaning a modern system. Converted gravity trunks are oversized sheet metal boxes that were never designed for the air velocity a forced-air furnace pushes, so debris settles out in them instead of moving along. We open them at accessible points rather than assuming a standard access panel exists, and we check what the branch runs are actually made of before anything goes in. In a lot of pre-1920 brick and four-square homes in midtown and the Northeast, the original trunk is still there with newer flex spliced onto it, and the two halves need to be handled differently.

There's wrapped insulation on the pipes near my furnace that looks original. Do you touch that?

No. If there's material at the plenum or on the trunk that looks like original asbestos wrap, we stop and tell you. We don't cut it, brush against it, or clean a section where we'd disturb it. That's abatement work for a licensed contractor, not duct cleaning. This comes up often enough in older Kansas City core homes that we look for it before quoting, not after. We can usually still clean the rest of the system once we know where the boundary is, and we'll say plainly what we're leaving alone and why.
