Why Independence ducts load up with debris

The usual cause here is the return side. Across the Kansas City area, builders panned floor joist cavities and used them as return air plenums. Those cavities were rarely sealed. They draw straight from the basement. Fine clay silt comes in on shoes. Rodent and insect debris collects in the bays. Sawdust and drywall dust from a finished basement never left. All of it recirculates.

Attics add the second half. Flex runs in vented attics sweat through July and August humidity. Low spots sag, hold water, and wet the insulation above the ceiling. The cooling coil and the return drop stay damp. That is where mold shows up first, not in the branch lines.

Not every duct should be brushed. Fiberglass ductboard plenums from the 70s and 80s shed fiber as the binder ages. Aggressive agitation tears them further. Surviving gravity conversions have oversized trunks that settle dust but clean easily. Galvanized sheet metal takes a brush fine.

Most metro homes do well on a three to five year interval. Pets, finished basements, panned-joist returns, or allergy-sensitive occupants pull that to two or three. Clean after remodeling, not before. Check your 1-inch filter: if it is collapsed inward, debris is bypassing it.
